[samsung phones] - Hands-on with Samsung’s SGH-i620 WM6 slider

31 08 2007

, Features, Samsung

It might look a little squat at first glance, but slide her open and the SGH-i620 is ready for business. We had some tactile problems with the touch-sensitive buttons up top, but the scroll wheel is like butter. Like most keyboards, we need some more time with it to give it a fair rating, but at first touch it’s certainly passable. The screen seems awkwardly tiny compared to most recent smartphones, but it’s certainly sharp and bright. In all the phone is a pleasure to hold and quite small enough to pocket, but we’re not quite sure how much we could get done with it — other than the usual photo snapping that Samsung phones are known for.

[LG phones] - Verizon’s roadmap for remainder of ‘07 gets liberated

31 08 2007

, HTC, LG, Motorola, Others, Palm, Samsung, UTStarcom, Verizon Wireless, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, 1xRTT, EV-DO, CDMA

phoneArena scored a wealth — nay, a veritable cornucopia of information detailing Verizon’s releases for the rest of 2007, and we can say with some confidence that there’s something in here for everyone. Starting with smartphones, SMT5800, XV6800, Samsung i760, and Motorola Q9m should hit in October, October, September, and August (yay, this month!) respectively. A second, business oriented variant of the Q9, dubbed the Q9c, will follow on in the fourth quarter. If Windows Mobile ain’t your cup of tea, have a gander at the Palm Treo 755p and RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 (pictured), both coming in November. There isn’t much to say about the 755p that hasn’t already been said, but the 8130 is indeed a Pearl of the “new” variety, upping the cam to 2 megapixels while adding A2DP and a 3.5mm jack. Turning to dumbphones, Verizon’s got the full spread from low to high end. The Samsung U410, self-branded CDM-8630 and LG VX8350 all appear to be pretty simple flips coming some time this half of the year. The Motorola Z6c looks to be a MediaFLO-less version of the Z6tv slider; the former drops in November while the latter is nebulously scheduled for the second half. Finally, the fancy U700 and U900 flips from Samsung offer 2 and 3 megapixel cams, respectively, and will both be available before the year’s out. Whew!

[Nokia Phones] - Hands-on with the US Nokia N95

31 08 2007

, Features, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Alright, ready for this? It’s real. We can say this with some degree of confidence, seeing how there’s one resting comfortably in our hands right now. We’ll skip right past the bulk of the details here — the handset remains largely unchanged from its European cousin, after all, which we’ve already seen — and concentrate on the juicy bits that have changed to make the handset not just more palatable for an American audience, but in general, to make it a better N95. Read on!

%Gallery-6496%

First up, let’s just clear the air: it’s got HSDPA on the 850MHz and 1900MHz bands. See that little “3G” symbol up there? We’ve seen it burn rubber via an AT&T SIM, and it is good. On a handful of speed tests we averaged about 690kbps down; we might have expected a smidge better, but we’re cutting the prerelease hardware and software some slack.

At a glance, the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 load seemed more or less identical to the previous N95 we’d used. Though we suspect this new one will be compatible with Nokia’s N-Gage offerings, our particular build didn’t have an N-Gage demo app installed like our N81 did. Also missing was any sign of the Nokia Music Store.

Physically, changes are as expected: the dedicated music controls are now dimpled to make them easier to feel out, the protective lens cover has disappeared, the lens itself is recessed into the case, and the back of the phone is black (a safer choice than the original lavender and sand, we’d venture). Our phone was equipped with an old-style 950mAh battery, though we’re not confident that means the shipping units will be without the rumored 1200mAh pieces. Note that the US N95 doesn’t share the new N95 8GB’s physical changes — they’re different beasts, and overall, the US N95 more closely resembles the original.

What more can we say? The N95’s good; the N95 with 3G we can use is better. For Nokia enthusiasts in the US, we think this one’s going to be a no-brainer, more or less.

Nokia announces XpressMusic 5310 and 5610

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

Nokia has added two models to its music oriented XpressMusic series today. The 5310 candybar clocks in at just 9.9mm thick, offers 18 hours of music playback — through the 3.5mm jack if you’re so inclined — a microSD slot supporting capacities up to 4GB, dedicated music controls, and a QVGA display for €225 (about $307) when it ships in the fourth quarter. Next up, the 5610 rocks a slider form factor and features a nifty slide navigation bar underneath the display, metallic and high-gloss finishes, a 2.2 inch QVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, and close to a full day of music playback for a tad more than its sibling, €300 (about $410), with a drop date also in Q4.
