[benq-siemens phones] - BenQ pulls the plug on its German mobile division

30 04 2007

Auf wiedersehen, BenQ-Siemens, we hardly knew ye. Yes, the struggling German mobile division of BenQ has just filed for bankruptcy protection as per orders from BenQ headquarters in Taiwan. The International Herald Tribune reports that BenQ estimated the company has lost $762 million on the mobile division (which employs 3,000 workers) since it took over the Siemens business in October 2005. Further, The Associated Press adds that the German division will be completely excised from BenQ “financially and operationally once the bankruptcy protection is approved.” It’s too bad that we won’t have the maker of “feminine luxury” or of the “Treo 600-killing” P50 to kick around anymore, because really, who doesn’t love a good underdog?

[LG phones] - Meet LG’s KS10: their S60 HSDPA slider with Google

30 04 2007

, LG, Symbian, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Looks like the first of LG’s phones with Google — not Google Phones — just peaked out from under the velvet cloth. Meet the LG-KS10, a WCDMA/HSDPA slider bringing a full-blown Symbian OS. We’re talking 2.4-inch LCD, 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, and multimedia playback when this pup hits Italy in April and the rest of Europe and South East Asia before the year is up. Come to think of it, this is the same “Joy” S60 slider we saw back in October sporting a full xHTML browser and microSD expansion. Mmm, mmm… good cracker. Check the gallery for more hot Symbian-on-LG action.

[Nokia Phones] - Nokia 8800 Sirocco Gold is the real deal

30 04 2007

, Nokia, GSM, GPRS, EDGE

It seems pretty un-Nokia to us for official variants of one of its phones to hit retail shops before we hear an announcement out of Espoo, but it appears that’s exactly what has happened here. The 8800 Sirocco Gold is, as one might expect, merely a gold-hued version of its 8800 Sirocco, combining almost-Vertu style and craftsmanship, almost-Vertu pricing, and a shiny yellow case for those times when neither silver nor black sufficiently express its owner’s “my phone’s more expensive than yours” attitude. Look for it to hit “select markets” (which we think excludes the US on account of the lack of GSM 850) bundled with a matching headset and desk stand for €1000 (about $1,355).

The Nokia E61i gets unboxed

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

If you were / are a Nokia E61 fan but wished those Finns would have refined it just a bit, you’re probably salivating over the E61i. Updates to the newer model include a 2 megapixel cam, a d-pad (no joystick) and a better QWERTY keyboard for your typing pleasure. If you’re wanting to see a svelte E61i get undressed, it’s been done to a decent degree for your viewing pleasure. That is, until you plunk down some cash for the real deal, right?

Nokia N75 finally launches on AT&T — sort of

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, ATT-Cingular, Symbian, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Hard to believe the day’s finally come, but that thing you’re looking at is actually Nokia’s long, long, freaking long-delayed N75 3G Symbian smartphone. Here. As in, here in America, on AT&T. You don’t really need us to tell you what it is (ok, well, if you do: it’s got a 2 megapixel camera, PlaysForSure support, Bluetooth, and plenty of media and messaging apps), but you’ll be stoked to learn the media-centric flip will run you just $200 (with rebate and 2-year). Grats, AT&T, we were starting to think you didn’t have it in you to launch a friggin 3G Symbian phone.

[Thanks, croquembouche11, via Boy Genius Report]

Update:
After a few all-too-brief hours of possible availability, AT&T has yanked the N75 from many zip codes — though it seems some lucky folks are still able to order. Your mileage, of course, may vary.
