[samsung phones] - Say hello to the Helio “Drift”

30 11 2006

, Samsung, Helio, Java, 1xRTT, EV-DO, MVNOs, CDMA

Word has it we’re looking here at Samsung’s first entry for Helio, christened the “Drift.” Coming hot on the heels of news that the Kickflip is no more, the glossy black Drift appears to be more of a phone in the Hero vein on account of its slider form factor. It’ll apparently come equipped with a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth (something the Kickflip sorely lacked) with A2DP, and a QVGA display, though we can’t yet confirm that it’ll be rocking the aforementioned Java platform from XCE. We’ll pass on more Drift news as we get it, but expect the phone to launch fairly shortly.

[motorola phones] - Low-cost MOTOFONE hits India

30 11 2006

, Motorola, GSM, CDMA

We knew Motorola had something (really) skinny up its sleeve way back in July, and after it got the ole thumbs-up from our constituents over at the FCC, we knew a whiz-bang release couldn’t be too far out. Thankfully (at least for India), today’s the day, and the MOTOFONE will finally find its way into (and surely out of) slim fit pockets everywhere. Moto announced immediate availability of the GSM-based F3 within India today at a dedicated event held in New Delhi, and stated that “international markets” could expect to get their palms on one “in the coming weeks.” Furthermore, the CDMA sibling (F3c) is slated to hit shelves “before the end of 2006.” While pricing details were cleverly omitted, we’re sure they’ll surface soon when local carriers jump on the bandwagon.

[Nokia Phones] - Cingular-branded Nokia N75 in the wild

30 11 2006

, Nokia, Cingular, Symbian, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS

Being the only scheduled-for-release Nokia device with UMTS 850 / 1900 on board, it didn’t take an industry insider to venture a guess that the N75 was on the fast track to US release. Neither, then, did it take a lot of brainpower to take a stab at the carrier, seeing how we’ve only got one around here with the right kind of bandwidth. Sure enough, a HowardForums member has managed to score a couple shots of an N75 emblazoned with that orange… uh, thing of a logo we all love (or love to hate, as the case may be). Rumor has it the S60 3rd Edition clamshell is on a fast track for release some time in November; as always, we’ll remain skeptical until a Cingular-branded N75 rests in our outstretched paws, but it certainly seems things are looking up for Symbian fans on Cingular.

Nokia N97 debunked; fanboys in mourning

Sorry folks, it was too good to be true. With a spec sheet that read like something straight out of our wildest dreams — 20GB hard drive, 3.2 megapixel cam, 3-inch high res display, FM radio, and an alleged 24+ hours of continuous music playback — we wanted to believe that the Nokia N97 was real. Alas, it turns out that a member of Nokia’s developer forums dreamed up the superphone; the rest, as they say, is history. Hey, at least we still have the N95 to look forward to, right?

Sony Ericsson cameraphones reign supreme at Flickr

Filed under: Moblogs, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Misc

Looks like our favorite photo sharing website Flickr is coming clean with the statistics of its most popular devices for its mobile upload service. Sony Ericsson has three of the top five spots with the K750 and K800 landing first and second. Now, we are as shocked as you are to see the Nokia N73 — 3.2 megapixel camera and all — coming up short on this one, especially considering that it supports Nokia’s mobile Flickr app. With the 5 megapixel N95 coming out in the near future, we don’t know how long Sony Ericsson will hold the crown
